The NHS Fife Adult Learning Disability Physiotherapy service aims to enable its clients to be as independent as possible, maximising their health and wellbeing by improving mobility, movement and function, where necessary advising on appropriate equipment. Indications for referral may include the following:

  • Movement and mobility problems/ falls
  • Orthopaedic conditions and soft tissue injuries, pain
  • Posture, seating and positioning problems including pressure care issues
  • Neurological conditions and secondary complications
  • Respiratory conditions / complications
  • Risk of developing muscle or joint problems due to limited movement opportunities
  • Poor cardiovascular function and exercise tolerance

All referrals are triaged by the team and the referrer may be contacted for further information. Appointments are usually offered via telephone but letters will be sent when the team are unable to contact someone over the telephone. If provided with an appointment and unable to attend, please call to cancel in advance.

Following referral the client will be fully assessed, appropriate treatment options will be discussed and advice given. There is a strong focus on joint working and goal planning with the client and their carers/family, as it is important that the advice given is incorporated into a client's daily care plan. We also work closely with our Physiotherapy colleagues in the Children and Young Peoples Physiotherapy service to support the transition process to adult services when the client leaves school.

Assessment will be carried out in the most appropriate location for the individual; this may include home visits, out-patient clinics, hospitals, day centres or leisure centres. Assessments may also be carried out via telephone consultation or via the use of Near Me technology.

We also have a Health Promotion and Physical Activity planning role when appropriate.

National postural care leaflets

Over the past two years The National Postural Management Steering Group has been meeting regularly to create a postural management pathway for Scotland. This group consists of a variety of Allied Health Professionals from across Scotland (working within different clinical areas and client groups), representatives from Scottish Government and NES. As well as third sector organisations, patients and their families whose lives have been impacted by changes in body shape. The pathway is still being developed but the below resources were developed by NES to promote awareness and released earlier to assist families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
