Maternity Triage Unit (MTU)

MTU is our 24 hour emergency telephone and outpatient service for pregnant women, staffed by midwives and  located within the Maternity Unit at Victoria Hospital.

The Maternity Triage Unit (MTU) is a 24‑hour emergency telephone and outpatient service for women at any stage of pregnancy and in the immediate postnatal period who have concerns related to their pregnancy.

It is staffed by midwives and is located within the Maternity Unit at Victoria Hospital.

From 2 February, all calls to maternity triage will be recorded for audit and training purposes.


If you are less than 13 weeks pregnant

If you are under 13 weeks pregnant and have abdominal pain and/or bleeding, please contact the:

Early Pregnancy Clinic (EPC): 01592 729706 (24 hours)

For any other pregnancy‑related concerns (not pain/bleeding), you should contact MTU.


What the MTU midwives can help with

MTU midwives provide telephone advice for pregnancy‑related concerns such as:

  • Bleeding
  • Feeling unwell
  • Pain
  • High blood pressure concerns
  • Reduced baby movements
  • Any other pregnancy‑related symptoms

You may be:

  • Asked to attend the assessment unit for review
  • Given advice to see your GP or community midwife
  • Advised on self‑care at home

You will also be encouraged to call back if you have any further worries, new symptoms, or if you need support.


If you are over 37 weeks pregnant and in labour

If you believe you are in labour and are 37 weeks pregnant or more, please contact the labour area where you plan to have your baby.
