Suicide is the act of intentionally ending your life. If you're reading this because you have, or have had, thoughts about taking your own life, or you are concerned for someone else, it's important you ask someone for help. What support is available in Fife?

Each year we participate in the Suicide Awareness Campaign to raise awareness of the subject locally in Fife. This year's campaign resources can be found here.

The Keeping Connected leaflet provides a directory of services available throughout Fife who offer help and support on a range of issues. We also have a Keeping Connected: Bereavement and Loss leaflet which contains useful websites and services which can support through bereavement.

We have some excellent Fife based services who can provide support for people in crisis or experiencing distress:

  • Sam’s Cafe - support people aged 16+ with mental wellbeing, crisis, emotions, life events and suicidal thoughts. Sam's has two drop in centres in Fife: Kirkcaldy at Linton Lane Centre (Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun 2-10pm) and Dunfermline at First House Woodmill Road (Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun 3-11pm).   • Many people who self-harm don't want to kill themselves but it is usually a sign that a person needs immediate help and support. The Penumbra Self-Harm Project supports people aged 18+ It is a friendly and user led support service to people who self-harm. Telephone: 01383 747 788

NHS Education for Scotland developed short animations which provide information on suicide awareness and what to do if you are concerned about someone:

  • Ask, Tell – look after your mental health: this animation explores what mental health is and that we all have mental health. Factors that can affect our mental health are explored, including how we can promote good mental health and respond compassionately to people who may be experiencing mental distress
  • Ask Tell – save a life, every life matters: this animation explores the issue of suicide, including statistics and facts about suicide in Scotland. It helps you to understand the signs that people may be thinking about suicide, and how and when to provide immediate help and support
