Health Visitors – what we do and the service we can provide
Health visitors are qualified nurses or midwives who have completed extra training in child health and development. All preschool children are entitled to support from a health visitor.
As a service, we offer you a home visit when you are pregnant and more home visits throughout the preschool life of your child, following a visiting pattern recommended by the Scottish Government. This helps us get to know you and your family so we are more able to support you to ensure that your child is as healthy as possible and able to reach their full potential.
When we see you we can:
- give you advice about feeding your baby and support you in whichever choice you make
- assess your child’s development
- discuss with you ‘what to expect next’ from your child so you can help them achieve their best
- give you information about local activities and groups
- provide information and support with managing things such as sleep, behaviours and toilet training
- assess health and wellbeing and refer to others if your child needs some additional support
- act as a link between you and other health services and other agencies
