Dietitians are qualified and regulated health professionals that assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems. Our dietitians work with individuals, families and at a public health level. We also provide nutritional training, education and information for health professionals and other agencies.
Our dietitians use the most up-to-date public health and science about food, health and disease. They translate this into practical guidance to enable people to make choices about food and lifestyle. We listen to patients, offer them choice, and involve them as much as possible in decisions about their future care. All our dietitians are dedicated professionals who are registered with the Health and Care Profession Council (HCPC).
What is dietetics?
Dietetics is the science of how nutrition affects our health. Scientific studies have shown how a change to our diet can help prevent or control a variety of health problems, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Community Referrals to the dietetic department are made via SCI-Gateway, from a consultant, GP, other Health Care Professionals and occasionally a self referral by the patient. Once the referral is received, if appropriate, a letter is sent to the person referred, parent, carer or next of kin asking them to make an appointment at an appropriate clinic/ward area. People referred then have one month in which to book their first appointment.
Acute (hospital inpatient) referrals
Acute (hospital inpatient) referrals are managed via the acute hospital services.
All requests for assistance will be triaged and may lead to signposting to other services, telephone or video consultations, or face to face appointments.
