What is Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS)?
Post Intensive Care Syndrome describes a complex chronic condition causing a range of physical, cognitive, psychological and social difficulties which persist after critical care discharge.
Many patients can have a poor quality of life after admission to Critical Care (Intensive care or High dependency). Reduced mobility and fitness, continuing health issues and increased dependency on family members can lead to anxiety, depression, stress and low self esteem. All of these can impair recovery from critical illness.
